Insulin in America
Communitas is a nonprofit that provides Direct Support Professional assistance in Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bremerton, and Port Orchard for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.
Did you know on this day, July 19th 1923, the mass production of Insulin in America started?
On January 23rd, 1923 the patent for American Insulin was awarded to Banting, Best, and Collip. They sold the patent to the University of Toronto for $1.00 each. Banting stated “Insulin does not belong to me, it belongs to the world.” He desired for everyone to have access to it if they needed.
Unfortunately, their discovery and wishes have not been honored. Pharmaceutical companies have continued to price-gouge people on this essential medication. 1 in 2 people still do not have access to Insulin.
