September 23rd is International Day of Sign Languages

Communitas is a nonprofit that provides Direct Support Professional assistance in Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bremerton, and Port Orchard for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

International Day of Sign Languages is a day to recognize and raise awareness of the many forms of Sign Languages that are necessary for deaf people.  There is no single "universal" version of Sign Language.  Each version is as complex as spoken languages, with their own grammatical processes.  As of 2021 there are more than 300 different versions of Sign Language.  Within American Sign Language, as an example, there are differences in dialect between the north and south.  There is also a difference how ethnic groups sign with each other.  Even within specific families, their language and accent can be different from others.
