Communitas is a nonprofit that provides Direct Support Professional assistance in Poulsbo, Silverdale, Bremerton, and Port Orchard for adults with intellectual/developmental disabilities.

Did you know that this coming Sunday July 24th is Parent Appreciation Day?  Due to us not being open on Sunday, we are raising awareness of this day today.  This will also allow you time to prepare something together as a family for this Sunday if you’d like to recognize this day.

Parent Appreciation Day is for recognizing outstanding parents; celebrating the teamwork involved with raising children, and support the role of parental guidance in building a strong, stable society.

We would like to highlight a couple of Facebook groups that advocate for minorities and their families.

First there is Kitsap County Parent Advocacy.  Their mission is to provide support to parents/caregivers whose child is diagnosed/pending a diagnosis of an intellectual/developmental disability. https://www.facebook.com/KitsapParentAdvocacy/

Second is the Washington State Fathers Network.  Their focus is on assisting fathers as they become more competent and compassionate caregivers for their children with special needs.  https://www.facebook.com/FathersNetworkWA/

The last one is PFLAG.  The first and largest organization for LGBTQ+ people, their parents and families, and allies.  https://www.facebook.com/PFLAG

Secondly, we want to highlight some groups that are great for the community, and provide amazing volunteer opportunities for your families.

First there is Kitsap Harvest.  Kitsap Harvest connects abundance to need by reducing food waste, nurturing community, and providing equitable access to fresh, locally grown food. https://www.facebook.com/KitsapHarvest/

Second is any Farmer’s Market in your area.  We will highlight Bremerton since our main office is in Bremerton. https://www.facebook.com/BremertonMarket/

The last one is The ARC of Washington State.  The Arc of Washington State has been advocating since 1936 for the rights and full inclusion of all people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.  https://www.facebook.com/TheArcofWashingtonState/

There are MANY more beneficial pages to help parents succeed in all aspects of their lives with their children, including engaging within the local community.
